Mini Haul and Updated October TBR

Sooo…. I was a little naughty this week.

I forgot to bring my book with me to school with and thus was stuck with a long, bookless wait between classes. So I did as all the book-obsessed do and went to Chapters to kill time. This was a bad idea. I am weak you guys. So weak. Despite all the massive book haul I did in September, I somehow walked out of the store with three new books. I had been watching too much booktube where all the TBRs were filled with spooky, magical, fantastical reads and I just couldn’t resist. When I saw those very books sitting on the shelves all my self control went out the window. And that is how I ended up with A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess, and Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova. My October TBR just got a whole lot spookier.

Since I finished I’ll Give You the Sun so early in the month I figured I had time for one more book, so why not three! I am currently half-way through A Monster Calls which is about a boy whose mother has cancer. The boy, Conor, has a recurring nightmare where the tree outside his window comes to life as a monster. This monster tells Conor that he will tell him three stories and when he is finished Conor must tell the monster a story of the truth. Already I can tell this book is going to gut me like a fish. Everything I’ve ever heart about it enforces the brilliance and sadness of the story. I’m sure A Monster Calls will be a hard act to follow.

But follow I must. Next up will be a book that was on my original TBR, Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake. A dark fantasy following three sisters who must fight to the death in order for one of them to become queen.

The third book I want to read this month is A Shadow Bright and Burning. This book follows Henriette Howell who is exposed as the last sorcerer of her kind and is thus chosen to protect the world from The Ancients, a group of demons hell-bent on destruction. This book is set in Victorian London and there is nothing better than a magical Victoria London. I can’t wait to dive into this one.

I’m praying I have enough time to read the last two books on my list this month, considering I do have midterms coming up. But I choose to be recklessly optimistic.

The fourth book on my October TBR is Labyrinth Lost. This book is based on Latin American mythology, which is so different from any other mythology I’ve read. It’s centered around Alex, a powerful bruja, whose attempts to rid herself of her magic backfire drastically. This book interests me so much and I am so excited to have a fresh take on magic with an entirely new magic system and mythological world.

Finally, I’ll finish off October with another book that was on my original TBR, Welcome to Night Vale.

I know that I am being a little too ambitious this month but I dying to read about magic and monsters and things mystical leading up to Halloween.

Wish me luck!

  1. I just finished A Monster Calls and I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would but really glad you’re liking it! Everyone is reading it in preparation for the movie and I’m so excited for it! All the books you plan on reading look so good!
